Coles is offering Australian schools the chance to win a share in $100,000 to help fund sustainability initiatives that benefit the environment as part of the inaugural Coles & Planet Ark Sustainable Schools Competition.
In partnership with Coles’ partner Planet Ark, 20 schools from across the country will each receive $5,000 to create or enhance an environmental project which could include a waste sorting system, water tank, composting scheme, food or wildlife garden, habitat restoration, a swap day or canteen audit.
Schools are encouraged to enter throughout the month of September via the Coles website, with the winners to be announced during Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week which runs from 11 to 17 November, and for which Coles is the major sponsor for a third consecutive year.
Applications close 11.59pm AEST 30 September 2024.

To be eligible to enter the competition, an applicant must:
- Be an authorised person including an educator, parent, volunteer or student, representing an Australian primary or secondary school registered with the respective school registration authority in each state or territory;
- Be a resident of Australia;
- Be aged 16 or over;
- Not an employee or immediate family member of the promoter or an agent of the promoter who is directly connected or associated with the competition; and
- Agree with the terms and conditions available on coles.com.au/important-information/terms/coles-schools-recycle-right.
You will receive an acknowledgement that your application has been received upon submission (please check your Junk or Spam inbox). If you do not receive this acknowledgement within two working days, please contact Coles Customer Care on 1800 061 562 to confirm your submission.
What sort of sustainability initiatives are eligible to enter?
Schools can enter an initiative that provides a clear benefit to the environment for example improves water quality, minimises waste produced, preserves wildlife, lowers energy consumption, enhances soil quality, reduces deforestation, enhances public health through cleaner environments, promotes a more sustainable form of transportation, helps to decrease greenhouse gas emissions or supports renewable energy sources.
The initiative must exist on school grounds and could include a community recycling drop off hub, implementation or reinvigoration of school-wide composting system, food garden, school canteen audit, swap-day event, waste sorting system, habitat boxes, wildlife garden or litter clean ups.
Are there any requirements stipulations on how the funds are spent?
How the school intends to spend the funds will need to be outlined in the application. The funds will need to be directed to one sustainability initiative. Coles will not fund the following:
- Excursions, consultancy, catering / food
- Photography and videography
- Teacher wages, existing administration, and labour costs (e.g. teacher relief costs)
- Professional Development and training courses for teachers
- Travel costs and airfares
- Synthetic grass and flowers
- Power tools
- Artwork / artist costs
Judging preference will be given to initiatives that are budgeted for the full amount of $5,000.
